“The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental” is the Principle of Mentalism, the first of seven principles in The Kybalion, a 1908 book on Hermetic philosophy. It means that reality at its root is mental — that the universe exists within a universal mind — and most readers take a practical lesson from it: your thoughts shape how you experience the world.

Where does “The All is Mind” come from?

The Kybalion was published in 1908 under the name “Three Initiates” and is widely attributed to the New Thought writer William Walker Atkinson. It presents itself as a summary of ancient Hermetic teaching organized into seven principles: Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. Mentalism comes first because the others build on it.

What does the Principle of Mentalism mean?

At the cosmic level it claims that everything we perceive is a creation within “The All” — an infinite, living mind. At the personal level the lesson is simpler: the mind is the lens for all experience, so changing how you think changes how you live. That's why the idea overlaps with modern mindset work, meditation and journaling.

The second principle, Correspondence, is the famous “as above, so below.” If the universe is mental, and the patterns above repeat below, then your own mind is a small version of the whole. The two are usually read together.
