Know Thyself: Meaning of the Ancient Greek Maxim

“Know thyself” is the English translation of the ancient Greek maxim gnōthi seauton. It was inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and it means understanding your own nature — your limits, your motives and your place in the world — before trying to understand anything else.

Where was “know thyself” written?

According to ancient writers such as the travel writer Pausanias, the phrase was inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, home of the famous oracle, alongside other short maxims — most famously “nothing in excess.” Visitors came to ask the god about their future, and the first thing they read told them to look inward.

What did the Greeks mean by it?

Originally it was most likely a call to humility: know that you are mortal, not a god, and don't overreach. Over time it grew into something broader — the idea that wisdom begins with honest self-examination.

Socrates and “know thyself”

Socrates made the phrase famous. In Plato's dialogues he returns to it again and again, arguing that before we can know anything else we have to know ourselves. At his trial, as Plato tells it, he said the unexamined life is not worth living. His whole method — questioning, admitting ignorance, testing beliefs — was know thyself in action.
